SNORKELING WITH MARINE WILDLIFE

Discovering our island’s marine biodiversity

During this tour, our team will take you on a journey through Tahiti’s marine biodiversity by exploring Tahiti’s coast to observe dolphins, swim with sea turtles and eagle rays, explore ship and plane wrecks, watch the most iconic seabirds of Society islands and dive in the open ocean with pelagic sharks. There are numerous opportunities to observe aquatic life, either from the boat or by snorkeling. As with all our tours, this is a private tour, limited to six people, with the goal of avoiding crowds for an intimate, safe, and respectful wildlife experience. This tour is available from November 10th to July 20th and suitable for all swimming levels.

This tour offers the opportunity to choose and combine one to five activities to realize your dream tour and maximize your chances of encountering wildlife. Be ready for a close encounter with the Tahitian petrel, come face to face with an endangered turtle, watch dolphins perform acrobatic competitions, dive to discover gatherings of spotted eagle rays, explore the wrecks spread out in Tahiti’s lagoon or feel the thrill or being surrounded by silky sharks in the big blue. So many activities for a unique tour that combines the best of Tahiti’s marine wildlife.

SILKY SHARK EXPERIENCE

SWIM WITH SHARKS IN THE BLUE

Far out, in the deep blue, there is a special place where you can jump from the boat and be quickly surrounded by curious silky sharks, an usually difficult species to meet in Polynesian waters. Getting into the water with these animals is a fascinating and unique experience.
Before entering the water, the guide will provide a detailled shark safety briefing in order to allow you to make the most of this unique experience, while learning how to behave with sharks in their natural environment.
Due to the adventure side of this activity, only intermediate and advanced snorkelers will be accepted. There are sometimes only a few sharks, and sometimes up to 20 are circling below your fins. It’s the kind of moment when you understand that humans and sharks can coexist. A unique experience to live with Moorea Ocean Adventures.

SEA TURTLES SNORKELING

SWIM WITH SEA TURTLES
Observe green and hawksbill sea turtles in their natural habitat

On the coast of Tahiti, we know an area where you can meet seaturtles, whitetip reef sharks, schools of goatfish and emperors and occasionnally spotted eagle rays. This reef is healthy and displays dramatic landscapes, making the snorkeling there a very special experience.
This is the perfect spot to meet one of the most iconic marine animals of French Polynesia: the sea turtle. Both green and hawksbill turtles can be found feeding and resting in this area. As it takes places on a pretty shallow reef, this snorkeling activity is ideal for beginners. Of course, these are wild animals, so it may happen that the turtles are not present on the day of your tour or that the area in question is impassable due to the weather.
Our biologist and naturalist guides have been personally involved in numerous sea turtle research and conservation programs, such as monitoring nesting sites, installing satellite tags, photo-identification, and censusing them. We will teach you where to find them, how to observe them without disturbing them, and tell you the fascinating story of their life cycle and why the protections put in place by the Polynesian government are essential for their survival.

DOLPHIN WATCHING

MEET TAHITI'S WILD DOLPHINS
A unique opportunity to meet dolphins in their natural environment

Tahiti's warm, clear waters make this island one of the best destinations for watching and swimming with dolphins. French Polynesia has been a marine mammal sanctuary since 2002, and the twenty or so species of whales and dolphins recorded there are fully protected. Join Moorea Ocean Adventures to meet spinner and rough-toothed dolphins on the island of Tahiti, French Polynesia.
Spinner dolphins are resident cetaceans of Tahiti and present year-round. In the morning, they are often encountered in large groups in Tahiti's lagoons and bays, resting from a nighttime hunt in the open ocean. We are pleased to offer private dolphin watching tours, with a sighting rate of over 70% for spinner dolphins. Other dolphin species also live near Tahiti's shores, such as the rough-toothed dolphin and the pilot whale. Although not as frequently seen as the spinner dolphins, our team has enough experience and knowledge to give you the best possible chance of spotting them. When we find pilot whales and rough-toothed dolphins, we go into the water as often as possible for unforgettable aquatic encounters.

WRECK EXPLORATION

DISCOVER THE MARINE LIFE AROUND WRECKS
Plane ship wrecks inside Tahiti's Lagoon

A few kilometers away, opposite the airport, lie three unmissable shipwrecks resting on the sand at the bottom of the water: a Catalina seaplane, a small Cessna airplane, and an old schooner. Originally, schooners were supply vessels between the islands; they measured between 25 and 30 meters.
These vessels were intentionally sunk in the lagoon in the 1970s for the benefit of divers and snorkelers.

Their hulls are still clearly visible, and these wrecks are home to a diverse population of fish. In the clear water, it's an ideal spot for underwater photography and a snorkeling area accessible to all levels.
A variety of marine life can be found there, including damselfish, wrasses, parrotfish,, triggerfish, lionfish,
stonefish, trumpetfish and sometimes leaf fish.

BIRD WATCHING

TAHITIAN PETRELS, FRIGATE BIRDS AND MORE
Tahiti's exclusive birdwatching experience

The coast of Tahiti is home to numerous species of seabirds and an ideal spot for birdwatching. Offshore bird hunts bring together brown and red-footed boobies, noddies, terns, and frigatebirds. Further along the coast, the surrounding cliffs attract tropicbirds, making this one of the best places in Polynesia to observe these majestic birds. This tour also offers a unique opportunity to observe the Tahiti petrel up close as it feeds, a fascinating species with a scavenging lifestyle.

The ecology and nesting habits of seabirds in French Polynesia are a fascinating story. Our naturalist guides' explanations will also help you understand how Polynesian fishermen have relied on birds for hundreds of years.

This activity takes place from the boat only and is ideal for photographers with long lenses and people, bird enthusiasts and people who do not wish to go in the water.

BIG BLUE DISCOVERY

DISCOVERING THE WILDLIFE OF THE OPEN OCEAN
Snorkeling in the Deep Blue

Join the Moorea Ocean Adventures team for open-ocean excursions miles off the coast of Tahiti in French Polynesia. Led by our team of biologists, naturalists, and experienced boat captains, you'll set out in search of the pelagic species that call the deep blue home. For guests with an adventurous spirit, this will be an adventure like no other: swimming with golden trevallies with 2,000 meters of water beneath your fins, watching the silhouette of a wahoo or pelagic dolphin slowly approaching you, or diving among groups of birds fishing in schools of fish are all unique experiences that will leave you with a unique memory! Welcome to a mysterious and dizzying world where anything seems possible...
We regurlaly meet flying fish, schools of skipjack tunas hunting, rough-toothe dolphins and beaked whales. But with some luck, you can surprised to find rarest species such as pilot whales, oceanic whitetip sharks, dwarf sperm whales and other cetacean species.
On this tour, it's impossible to predict what we'll meet. With open ocean exploration, it is important to remember that due to the random nature of observations of pelagic species, there is a risk of not seeing the species sought. It's like deep sea fishing, you try with the hope of a spectacular reward but there is the risk to returning empty-handed but nonetheless happy with the offshore sailing, the feeling of freedom so far from everything and the magnificent landscapes along the way.

EAGLE RAYS

CORAL REEFS DISCOVERY
Snorkeling Exploration of Tahiti's Coral Gardens

Among our various snorkeling spots, there's one that's truly special when visibility is good. Here, you'll find a group of eagle rays gliding slowly above the seabed. This is one of the iconic species of French Polynesian lagoons, and to top it all off, it's incredibly photogenic with its mosaic of white spots on its back. Entering the water and swimming here are easy, and it's a must-do activity for any marine wildlife enthusiast visiting Tahiti. Join us for an opportunity to respectfully observe these animals while learning more about their way of life.

Besides the leopard rays, we have other snorkeling spots to explore Tahiti's reefs, including the reef crevices located close to the barrier reef, where the underwater landscapes are spectacular.

UNDERWATER FLYING

FLYING OVER THE TAHITI SEABED
A fun and surprising way to discover the underwater landscapes!

Moorea Ocean Adventures offers a surprising aquatic activity where you can "fly" above Tahiti's underwater landscapes like a manta ray. Are you ready for a snorkeling session full of thrills and adventure? This is the activity for you if you are comfortable in the water.
The boards we use are prototypes that have been used for scientific research for years. Biologists were towed at low speed behind a boat while attached to these boards and equipped with fins, masks, and snorkels. We have evolved these boards from a simple scientific tool to a fun and practical way to observe marine life. This activity truly gives you the feeling of flying while admiring so much more of the reef's fauna than during a simple aquatic excursion. The two boards are attached to the boat by a rope. To ensure your safety and to show you the most difficult-to-seen species, one client and one guide will be in the water at the same time. The boat moves at 2-3 kilometers per hour while swimmers are towed on the surface or underwater for short breath-holds. After the learning phase to familiarize yourself with these new sensations, you'll realize that many species can be observed: sea turtles, reef sharks, napoleon wrasse, spotted eagle rays, and sometimes even a pod of curious spinner dolphins. We highly recommend this activity to anyone looking to get off the beaten track and try new experiences. Available exclusively at Moorea Ocean Adventures!
