SNORKELING WITH MARINE WILDLIFE

Discovering our island’s marine biodiversity

During this tour, our team will take you on a journey through Moorea’s marine biodiversity by exploring Moorea’s coral reefs to observe dolphins, sea turtles, rays, coral gardens, ocean species, and tropical fish. There are numerous opportunities to observe aquatic life, either from the boat or by snorkeling. As with all our tours, this is a private tour, limited to six people, with the goal of avoiding crowds for an intimate, safe, and respectful wildlife experience. This tour is available year-round and suitable for all swimming levels.

This tour offers the opportunity to choose and combine one to five activities to realize your dream tour and maximize your chances of encountering wildlife. Drift with the current through the passes to encounter grey sharks, come face to face with an endangered turtle, watch dolphins perform acrobatic competitions, dive to discover one of the largest gatherings of spotted eagle rays in the world, take the time to observe the iconic clownfish in a colorful coral garden or visit the famous sandbar with its dozens of stingrays and blacktip sharks. So many activities for a unique tour that combines the best of Moorea’s marine wildlife.

RAYS AND SHARKS SNORKELING

STINGRAYS AND SHARKS IN THE LAGOON
Moorea's most famous snorkeling spot

Moorea is an ideal place to encounter stingrays and blacktip sharks for the first time. The stingray sandbar is a must-see during your stay. It's a sandy area about 1.3 meters deep, where you can stand and swim safely with the animals. The stingrays are accustomed to human presence and have become so curious that they sometimes approach swimmers while the sharks keep their distance.
Be prepared for unforgettable, up-close encounters with these fascinating creatures. Led by our team of marine biologists and naturalist guides, you'll experience a fun experience with plenty of explanations about their ecology, their life cycle, and what makes rays and sharks unique in the animal kingdom. We love this snorkeling spot because it offers our guests the opportunity to get in the water for the first time with large marine animals in complete safety and in ideal conditions to build their confidence. We place particular emphasis on not disturbing the animals, asking our guests to respect a simple code of conduct.
The Sandbank for Rays is a well-known area of Moorea and therefore often very busy, sometimes with more than 100 people at a time. Join us to avoid this kind of situation and find yourself face-to-face with the rays and sharks with no one around. We know the best times and how to avoid large groups.

DOLPHIN WATCHING

MEET MOOREA'S WILD DOLPHINS
A unique opportunity to meet dolphins in their natural environment

Moorea's warm, clear waters make our island one of the best destinations for watching and swimming with dolphins. French Polynesia has been a marine mammal sanctuary since 2002, and the twenty or so species of whales and dolphins recorded there are fully protected. Join Moorea Ocean Adventures to meet spinner and rough-toothed dolphins on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia.
Spinner dolphins are resident cetaceans of Moorea and present year-round. In the morning, they are often encountered in large groups in Moorea's lagoons and bays, resting from a nighttime hunt in the open ocean. We are pleased to offer private dolphin watching tours, with a sighting rate of over 90% for spinner dolphins. Other dolphin species also live near Moorea's shores, such as the rough-toothed dolphin and the pilot whale. Although not as frequently seen as the spinner dolphins, our team has enough experience and knowledge to give you the best possible chance of spotting them. When we find pilot whales and rough-toothed dolphins, we go into the water as often as possible for unforgettable aquatic encounters.

SEA TURTLES SNORKELING

SWIM WITH SEA TURTLES
Observe green and hawksbill sea turtles in their natural habitat

Join Moorea Ocean Adventures and meet one of the most iconic marine animals of French Polynesia: the sea turtle. Observing and approaching turtles while snorkeling in their natural habitat is a magical experience. These species are among the most fascinating animals in the marine world, and swimmers are always delighted to encounter them and swim alongside them.
Our biologist and naturalist guides have been personally involved in numerous sea turtle research and conservation programs, such as monitoring nesting sites, installing satellite tags, photo-identification, and censusing them. We will teach you where to find them, how to observe them without disturbing them, and tell you the fascinating story of their life cycle and why the protections put in place by the Polynesian government are essential for their survival. Green and hawksbill turtle feeding and resting areas are usually located in shallow waters, making this snorkeling activity ideal for beginners. Of course, these are wild animals, so it may happen that the turtles are not present on the day of your tour or that the area in question is impassable due to the weather. There are several favorite sea turtle areas around Moorea, and with a little patience, a sea turtle encounter usually happens.

REEF SNORKELING

CORAL REEFS DISCOVERY
Snorkeling Exploration of Moorea's Coral Gardens

Join Moorea Ocean Adventures for a unique snorkeling experience to discover the wildest and most unspoiled areas of Moorea's coral reefs. Each tour is unique, as the marine wildlife varies from one area to another.
The clear, warm waters, magnificent underwater landscapes, and the presence of seven marine protected areas (protected biodiversity) are all assets that will make your snorkeling tour a unique experience.

CORAL GARDENS: The coral gardens are a bustling city in the lagoon, home to dozens of colorful species. Exploring them is a perfect opportunity to encounter parrotfish, butterflyfish, and surgeonfish. These sites are shallow and ideal for beginner swimmers. A wide variety of tiny creatures such as Christmas tree worms, nudibranchs, and pipefish await macro photography enthusiasts!

REEF PASSES: The passes are an opening in the reef, a passage between the lagoon and the ocean where the water is renewed. The animals, which find abundant food there, are very numerous. Along the sides of the reef pass, you can explore sometimes vertiginous coral drop-offs where numerous species of fish breed. The currents, when strong, allow for drift snorkeling! Thrills guaranteed! OUTER SLOPE: The outer slope, which extends from 0 to more than 200 meters deep, is home to the deepest reefs on the island where encounters with majestic species are not rare: turtles, barracudas, jacks, etc. In a little less water, you can also explore the cracks of the reef and their spectacular reliefs: a very specific life has taken up residence there and these natural valleys are perfect for beautiful atmospheric photos.

OCEAN SHARK ENCOUNTER

SWIM WITH SHARKS IN THE BLUE
An educational and unforgettable experience with the lords of the ocean

The outer slope, located on the ocean side behind the coral reef, is an ideal place to encounter blacktip and lemon sharks. Getting into the water with these animals is a fascinating and unique experience. With a little luck, you might even spot reef whitetip sharks, nurse sharks, or grey reef sharks.
Before entering the water, our guide will provide you with all the necessary information about the ecology and behavior of sharks, which are fully protected in French Polynesia, and will explain why you shouldn't be afraid of sharks.
After the safety briefing, you'll be able to swim in the blue before quickly being surrounded by several reef sharks who will pose for unforgettable photos and videos! You'll understand that humans and sharks can live in harmony and that ecotourism is often the key to better management of marine areas. A unique experience to live with Moorea Ocean Adventures.

BIG BLUE DISCOVERY

DISCOVERING THE WILDLIFE OF THE OPEN OCEAN
Snorkeling in the Deep Blue

Join the Moorea Ocean Adventures team for open-ocean excursions miles off the coast of Moorea in French Polynesia. Led by our team of biologists, naturalists, and experienced boat captains, you'll set out in search of the pelagic species that call the deep blue home. For guests with an adventurous spirit, this will be an adventure like no other: swimming with golden trevallies with 2,000 meters of water beneath your fins, watching the silhouette of a wahoo or pelagic dolphin slowly approaching you, or diving among groups of birds fishing in schools of fish are all unique experiences that will leave you with a unique memory! Welcome to a mysterious and dizzying world where anything seems possible...
Our open-ocean discovery tours begin with the opportunity to observe and photograph seabirds hunting in the open ocean. We regularly encounter several species, including frigatebirds, boobies, terns, noddies, tropicbirds, and shearwaters.
We often encounter schools of bonito or tuna feasting on small fish near the surface, while birds attack by diving from the sky. It's then possible to get in the water and see what's happening, sometimes resulting in encounters worthy of a National Geographic magazine.
On this tour, it's impossible to predict what we'll encounter. The most commonly observed pelagic species are rough-toothed dolphins, beaked whales, pilot whales, oceanic whitetip sharks, marlins, and schools of tuna. Very rarely, encounters with a manta ray, a pod of sperm whales, Risso's dolphins, or a whale shark are possible. Finally, it is important to remember that due to the random nature of observations of pelagic species, there is a risk of not seeing the species sought.

UNDERWATER FLYING

FLYING OVER THE MOOREA SEABED
A fun and surprising way to discover the underwater landscapes!

Moorea Ocean Adventures offers a surprising aquatic activity where you can "fly" above Moorea's underwater landscapes like a manta ray. Are you ready for a snorkeling session full of thrills and adventure? This is the activity for you if you are comfortable in the water.
The boards we use are prototypes that have been used for scientific research for years. Biologists were towed at low speed behind a boat while attached to these boards and equipped with fins, masks, and snorkels. We have evolved these boards from a simple scientific tool to a fun and practical way to observe marine life. This activity truly gives you the feeling of flying while admiring so much more of the reef's fauna than during a simple aquatic excursion. The two boards are attached to the boat by a rope. To ensure your safety and to show you the most difficult-to-seen species, one client and one guide will be in the water at the same time. The boat moves at 2-3 kilometers per hour while swimmers are towed on the surface or underwater for short breath-holds. After the learning phase to familiarize yourself with these new sensations, you'll realize that many species can be observed: sea turtles, reef sharks, napoleon wrasse, spotted eagle rays, and sometimes even a pod of curious spinner dolphins. We highly recommend this activity to anyone looking to get off the beaten track and try new experiences. Available exclusively at Moorea Ocean Adventures!
